2001: An IT Odyssey

The IT industry is again in a period of massive reinvention. Driven by the lack of a master computing platform, no major IT investment decision is "safe", as it appeared only a decade ago. With shorter and shorter product life cycles, and dramatic trends toward distributed computing and Internet commerce, long-term strategic planning becomes increasingly problematic. Responding to these challenges will require a dramatic rethinking of how IS is run, how it is measured, and its relationship and involvement with the business.

Bob Hafner, Gartner Group Vice President and Research Director, is Product Champion for Enterprise Network Strategies Canada (ENSC). He sets the direction and performs research and analysis on all technical, management and regulatory telecommunications issues in Canada. Before joining Gartner Group Canada in 1990, Mr. Hafner was employed by the Bank of Nova Scotia as manager of tandem systems planning and manager, communications projects. Mr. Hafner has a bachelor's of science degree from the University of Toronto.
