David Hiscock, CA, CMA, CPA will be our speaker at the Data Warehouse Special Interest Group on Tuesday, May 26, 1998. Mr. Hiscock is a Lecturer in Accounting at the University of Waterloo and at Wilfrid Laurier University. Prior to this, he worked in private industry for over 15 years at senior financial positions in the Insurance and Manufacturing sectors, and as a Management Consultant with Deloitte and Touche and Price Waterhouse. His IT experience includes the development of decision support databases for senior management enquiry and marketing analysis.
There are many issues that have to be addressed to successfully implement a data warehouse or data mart. These issues can be categorized in a number of domains: politics, culture, technology, and data. Improper management of any of these domains can lead to failure. Politics relates to which department head will win the battle over whose version of the truth will prevail. Culture relates to the differences in the way departments such as Marketing, Engineering and Finance interpret events such as sales. Technology relates to the hardware and software requirements to support a functioning data mart. Data relates to the differences in the way that events are recorded. All of these domains are inter-related, and order needs to be brought to this tangled mess. This presentation will relate how these data mart implementation issues were resolved in a real live situation.
