Data warehousing, like many technologies that have come and gone, promises much. However, there is widespread skepticism that it can actually deliver the promised benefits. The risk is that data warehousing may be just another example of "silver bullet thinking" - that if we just implement the "right" technology, benefits will naturally follow.
DMR's Benefits Realization approach is a response to this dilemma. It is based on the premise that there is no such thing as an IT investment today - only investments in IT-enabled change. It enables organizations to design change programs that take into account all the initiatives, including those over and above IT initiatives, that are required to deliver benefits to the business.
This presentation will explain what Benefits Realization is and how it applies to Data Warehousing. A key technique of the approach, Results Chain modeling, will be reviewed and a walk through of a sample results chain for data warehousing will be conducted.
Our speaker is Patrick Sue, a senior consultant with the DMR Consulting Group in the Business Intelligence Practice. His first data warehousing project was in 1994, and he has been involved in data warehousing since then. He has co-chaired the IRMAC DW SIG for the past four years, and contributed to the development of the CMA handbook "Building a Data Warehouse", published in 1998.
