14 Ways to Use An Enterprise Ontology
An Enterprise Ontology is a formal (that is machine processible) description of the key information that is shared in your enterprise. It typically takes most organizations 3-6 months to build a reasonable first cut Enterprise Ontology. Before embarking on that kind of effort it might make sense to contemplate what you would do with one if you had one.
In this talk Dave McComb will describe 14 different applications for an enterprise ontology, drawn both from their own work with clients as well as the reported work of others. These 14 applications fall into two groups: seven design time applications and seven run time applications. One of his contentions is that any one of these applications could likely justify the effort of building the ontology, but the benefits multiply when the same ontology is applied to multiple applications.
Dave McComb is President of Semantic Arts, a consulting company specializing in helping large organizations adopt semantic technologies. Semantic Arts have worked with Procter & Gamble, Lexis Nexis, Sallie Mae, Sentara Healthcare, Colorado Childcare Enforcement and several agencies in Washington State. He was the co-founder and Program Chair for the Semantic Technology Conference, and wrote “Semantics in Business Systems.” He is a frequent speaker and writer.
