Big Data and the Quantified Society

In the last two years, the world went through a significant change. We stopped being afraid of technology, and started being afraid of not having it. Our mobile devices aren’t smartphones – they’re prosthetic brains, able to capture, track, and augment everything we do.

At the core of this change is the Big Data movement. Faced with a torrent of information, we’re finding new ways to combine people and machines to make sense of it all. The results are sometimes beautiful – predicting epidemics, sending money where it does the most good, helping people learn better, and even finding the perfect mate. But they’re also frightening, invading privacy and putting the fate of many in the hands of a few.

In this session, we’ll look at what Big Data is, some of the promise and peril it brings, and how it paves the way for a connected, quantified society – for better or for worse.

In 2001, he co-founded web performance startup Coradiant, and since that time has also launched Rednod, CloudOps, Bitcurrent, Year One Labs, the Bitnorth conference, and several other early-stage companies.
