Big Data and the Quantified Society

In the last two years, the world went through a significant change. We stopped being afraid of technology, and started being afraid of not having it. Our mobile devices aren’t smartphones – they’re prosthetic brains, able to capture, track, and augment everything we do.

At the core of this change is the Big Data movement. Faced with a torrent of information, we’re finding new ways to combine people and machines to make sense of it all. The results are sometimes beautiful – predicting epidemics, sending money where it does the most good, helping people learn better, and even finding the perfect mate. But they’re also frightening, invading privacy and putting the fate of many in the hands of a few.

In this session, we’ll look at what Big Data is, some of the promise and peril it brings, and how it paves the way for a connected, quantified society – for better or for worse.

Alistair Croll , has been an entrepreneur, author, and public speaker for nearly 20 years. He’s worked on web performance, big data, cloud computing, and a number of startups, in that time. A sought-after expert on the convergence of technology and society, he’s spoken at events around the world.

In 2001, he co-founded web performance startup Coradiant, and since that time has also launched Rednod, CloudOps, Bitcurrent, Year One Labs, the Bitnorth conference, and several other early-stage companies. He’s also the chair of Cloud Connect, O’Reilly Strata, and the International Startup Festival.

Alistair is the author of three books on web performance, analytics, and IT operations. He’s recently published Lean Analytics (O’Reilly Media), which shows how to use data to build a better business faster. A native Montrealer, he tries to mitigate chronic ADD by writing about far too many things at Solve For Interesting.
