Data’s Role in Driving Innovation

A panel of three innovators will guide us through a discussion illustrating how—so-called big data—is becoming a key basis of competition, underpinning new product development, growth and innovation. The panel will speak to results that show that leaders – not just the data managers – in every sector have to confront the implications of big data and the increasing volume and detail of information captured by enterprises.

Panel members are the centrepiece of this session, include Communitech members/partners from industry. Large and startup enterprises demonstrate and share how they use data to drive innovation. Craig Haney from Canadian Tire, Jonathan Latsky from Envirolytics, David Wigg from exactEarth, and Dr. Xiaoping (Steven) Zhang from Eido will speak to ‘Data’s Role in Driving Innovation’.

Glenn Smith, our panel moderator, is a University of Waterloo Engineering graduate. Glenn draws on 20+ years of experience in broad business, technology development and commercialization with two University of Waterloo spin-off companies (Advanced Scientific Computing, Biomedical Photometrics) as well as Centers of Excellence in commercialization (Communitech, Ontario Centers of Excellence (OCE) and Institute National d’Optique (INO)). Glenn actively advises early stage companies and social ventures around approaches to create value, generate revenue and mitigate risk. Glenn is also the founding Chairman of Blue Sea Philanthropy and a Partner and Board Director of Social Venture Partners Waterloo Region. Further details can be found at
