Financial Justification For Data Warehousing

Is data warehousing a financially sound investment for an organisation? One of the key contentions of building a data warehouse is that the information it provides to business users will be invaluable and far outweigh the associated costs. In fact many people view data warehousing as one of the key components to finally refute the long-standing argument from the executive ranks that technology investments are not having a significant impact on productivity.

This presentation will focus on some of the key issues in measuring the financial impact of technology on an organisation. Included will be some anecdotes from a major study being conducted by IDC. Also discussed will be how to make a financial argument for building a data warehouse.

Michael O’Neil is the Senior Vice President responsible for IDC Canada’s research operations. Mr O’Neil is recognised throughout Canada as a leading source of information on the IT industry. He speaks frequently at trade shows and conferences, including COMDEX Canada, UNIX EXPO, Telemedicine and at seminars hosted by leading hardware and software vendors. Mr O’Neil is regularly quoted in the trade press, business press and on television, and is the author of a monthly column (“In Directions”) in InfoCanada Reseller magazine.

Data Warehouse Special Interest Group

At the October 18th IRMAC meeting, Deborah Henderson and Patrick Sue proposed the setting up of a Data Warehouse Special Interest Group. A survey of the members in attendance indicated strong interest in forming such a group. The survey also gathered input on the relative priorities of the many issues surrounding data warehouse. In the second half on our meeting, we will discuss the results of this survey and members will be invited to comment on issues.

The purpose of a SIG, as its name suggests, is to focus on a topic that is narrower than the interests of the main body to which the SIG is attached. Interest in Data Warehousing has become so intense that frequent meetings are appropriate – hence the SIG. The first SIG meeting will be on December 5th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm (location to be announced). The speaker will be Mr. Hannan Chervinsky, a principal of ABS System Consultants. Hannan recently spoke at the ‘Business Benefits of Data Warehouse’ conference on ‘What is a Data Warehouse and why is it so critical?’ For information on the SIG please contact Deborah at (416) 592-2669 or Patrick at (416) 449-0738.
